Books about Childhood Diabetes
Diabetes Care for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers:
A Reassuring Guide
My young son was diagnosed at 15 months of age. I found this book to be a very valuable resource to me as I learned to care for him. It contains many things I needed to know that I couldn't find in other books. I highly recommend it to parents of young children with diabetes. I have turned to it again and again!
Growing Up with Diabetes: What Children Want
Their Parents to Know
A wonderful combination of accurate info, humor, and sharp insight into what it's like to be a child with diabetes. Parents will see themselves somewhere in this book (if not everywhere!). Parents get so caught up in the medical end of things - numbers, dosages, shots, carbs - this book really helps you see things from your child's point of view. There are helpful suggestions, often delivered with a description of a real-life situation the author has experienced, to get you thru rough spots. A great book!
Parenting a Child With Diabetes: A Practical,
Empathetic Guide to Help You and Your Child Live with Diabetes
I was given this book by another parent of a diabetic child and I read it and reread it. It is so honest about all the things that can happen to your child as well as encouragement. It has been a reference guide for our family. Her cookbook is wonderful too!
Sweet Kids: How to Balance Diabetes Control and
Good Nutrition with Family Peace
A wonderful book that took me through the hurdles when my grandson was first diagnosed. I referred to it again when researching my own book about type 1. I recommend it highly.
Real Life Parenting of Kids with Diabetes
When my 4 1/2yr old was diagnosed in 2002, I was so scared that the fun part of his life was over. I bought 10 books & decided to read this one first. I was so happy & relieved to read about this great woman's calm approach to her boys diabetes. Both of her boys were diagnosed before 7 & continued on to do great things with their lives. This is a must read, it will relieve some of your worries & give you hope that life does go on & your child WILL be just fine.
Getting a Grip on Diabetes: Quick Tips for Kids
and Teens
If there are only two
books you buy for diabetes type 1 management this is one of the two (the
other being "Real Life Parenting of Kids with Diabetes)" written by Spike
and Bo's mother (Virgina Nasmyth Loy). |
